On a 3-unit fixed bridge (replacing 1 missing tooth, anchored on 2 adjacent teeth) in all-ceramic zirconia / e-max (€2,100 to €3,300 at the clinic), claiming 20% back in Revenue myAccount brings your net cost to €1,680 to €2,640.

Why dentists count 'units' rather than missing teeth
The single most common point of confusion on a dental fee list is the word unit. In dentistry, one 'unit' is one artificial tooth made by the dental laboratory — whether it is a hollow crown cemented over a supporting tooth (an abutment) or the solid false tooth suspended over the gum gap (a pontic):
- Replacing 1 missing tooth with a traditional bridge = 3 units: one crown on the tooth in front of the gap + one false pontic tooth in the middle + one crown on the tooth behind the gap. At €600 to €1,100 per unit, 3 × €600–€1,100 = €1,800 to €3,300.
- Replacing 1 missing tooth with a cantilever bridge = 2 units: one crown on a single strong neighbouring tooth holding one false pontic tooth beside it (€1,300 to €2,400).
- Replacing 2 missing teeth in a row = 4 units: two supporting crowns at either end plus two false pontics in the middle (€2,400 to €4,400).
When an abutment tooth needs a root canal or core build-up first
Before cementing a fixed bridge that will stay in place for 10 to 15 years, your dentist takes a periapical X-ray of the two supporting teeth on either side of the gap. If one of those supporting teeth has a deep old filling close to the nerve or a quiet root infection, it may need a core build-up (€120 to €250) or root canal treatment (see our sister guide at rootcanal.ie) before the bridge is made — which also qualifies for 20% Form Med 2 tax relief.

Questions patients ask
Is the temporary bridge included in the dental bridge price?
Yes. While the dental laboratory fabricates your permanent zirconia or porcelain bridge (which takes 10 to 14 days), the dentist fits a tooth-coloured acrylic temporary bridge at your preparation appointment so you never walk out with a visible gap.
How much does it cost to re-cement a dental bridge that has come loose?
If your existing dental bridge comes off in one piece and the supporting teeth underneath are still healthy and free of decay, cleaning and re-cementing the bridge usually costs €90 to €180 in a single short visit.
